History
Saticoy Sowers began in 2022 as a response to prospective Saticoy Farmers Market vendors seeking space for food production and operations training. With an initial curriculum developed in 2023 by UCSB Environmental Studies students led by Ava Abeck, and later expanded by Food Access Coordinator Kim Aguilar and California Climate Action Corps Fellows, the program officially launched in 2024. Saticoy Sowers empowers participants to battle food apartheid and build food sovereignty through a backyard cultivation program rooted in regenerative agriculture and cultural practices. Using a teaching garden to bridge theory and practice, the program emphasizes composting, cultural relevance, and language access, legitimizing community science while reconnecting participants with the land and their heritage. Since its launch, 35 participants have engaged in the program, with 29 expected to graduate across its first two cohorts, marking a collective effort to reclaim community control over food systems.

The Saticoy Community Fridge provides a space for folks to take the food they need and leave what they don't need. The Saticoy Community Fridge is a mutual aid effort and prioritizes solidarity in community.

History
The Saticoy Community Fridge is a neighborhood-driven food-sharing initiative that ensures everyone has access to fresh, healthy food. It began in 2021 when board member Kathryn Kinberg set up a fridge and pantry in her front yard, and Saticoy Food Hub soon partnered to host it. Community members, including kids from the Boys and Girls Club, helped paint and decorate the fridge, and volunteers have supported its ongoing operation ever since. Today, it functions as a mutual-aid hub where anyone can freely contribute or take food. We accept locally grown, whole, uncut produce, as well as shelf-stable items from backyard gardens and small farms, like honey, herbs, and tea. Dry or canned grains, beans, vegetables, and fruits are also welcome.
